park born on 14 november 1917, in gumi, north gyeongsang in korea under japanese rule, parents park sung-bin , bek nam-eui. youngest of 5 brothers , 2 sisters in poor yangban family. extremely intelligent, egotistic , ambitious, park s hero boyhood on napoleon, , expressed disgust had grow in poor , backward countryside of korea, place not suitable himself. knew park youth recalled recurring theme of remarks wish escape korean countryside. had grown under japanese rule, park expressed admiration japan s rapid modernization after meiji restoration of 1867 , bushido ( way of warrior ), japanese warrior code.


as youth, won admission teaching school in daegu , worked teacher in mungyeong-eup after graduating teaching degree, reportedly mediocre student. following outbreak of second sino-japanese war, ambitious park decided enter changchun military academy of manchukuo imperial army, imperial japanese army colonel arikawa (a drill instructor @ teaching school in daegu impressed park s military ambitions). during time, adopted japanese name takagi masao (高木正雄). graduated top of class in 1942 (receiving gold watch emperor puyi himself) , recognized talented officer japanese instructors, recommended him further studies @ imperial japanese army academy in japan.
