history
formation
in 1998, sdk created coalition of 5 small centre-right , centre-left parties intending contest slovak parliamentary elections year. initial agreement form party 150 members , dissolve after elections in 1998. after successful 1998 elections, sdk formed government kdh, sdĽ , smk-mkp. initial agreement not successful, , prime minister mikuláš dzurinda (kdh) announced formation of new party - slovak democratic , christian union (sdkÚ). sdk members joined new party while others returned original parties. new party registered on 18 february 2000. on 17 november constitution congress elected mikuláš dzurinda chairman, vice chairmen being edvard kukan, zuzana martináková, milan kňažko , Ľubomír harach. gabriel palacka became responsible finances.
reforms 1998-2006
after creation, majority of ministers of slovak government members of sdkÚ. sdkÚ considered reform oriented party. coalition partners party of hungarian coalition, party of civic understanding , party of democratic left.
in parliamentary election of 17 june 2006, party won 18.4% of popular vote , 31 out of 150 seats in national council. despite losing large number of votes, party still able form coalition government former partners such christian democratic movement, party of hungarian coalition , new party alliance of new citizen.
2010 election
for 2010 parliamentary election, dzurinda yielded number-one slot on party s list iveta radičová, though remained party chairman. in election, party won 15.42% of popular vote corresponding 28 seats in national council. iveta radičová become first female prime minister in history of slovakia, forming new centre-right government consisted of sdkÚ-ds, sas, most-hÍd , kdh. custom, president ivan gašparovič first gave charge form new government winning party smer-sd , leader robert fico, unable so. government collapsed on 11 october 2011 after lost confidence in parliament. radičová subsequently decided not take candidacy in next elections , served prime minister until socialist government took office on 4 april 2012.
2012 election
mikuláš dzurinda led party 2012 parliamentary election. party defeated badly, receiving 6.09% of votes , losing more half of seats. dzurinda chose resign position chairman of skdu, , party congress held on 19 may 2012 new leader chosen. pavol frešo, lucia Žitňanská , viliam novotný candidates, frešo won 242 out of 404 votes. lucia Žitňanská received 142 votes , announced not candidate position of vice-chairperson.
in 2014 european elections, sdkÚ-ds came third place nationally, receiving 7.75% of vote , electing 2 meps.
out of 11 pms elected in 2012 1 remained in party of 2015.
2016 election
the party led pavol frešo. however, during previous term sdkÚ-ds practically fell apart inside, when own members of parliament chose leave party. result, frešo has tough position , if campaign led alongside slovak right-wing consensus against smer-sd party, failed. while gaining 0,27% of votes , losing 95% of previous voters in election of 5.3.2016, party has received worst result in history. sdkÚ-ds has won in 1 village, pavlovce in rimavská sobota district. frešo has commented sdkÚ-ds party has defended openly european ideas, opposing building of fences against immigrants in european migrant crisis. chairman said current situation big challenge presidium.
a party congress held on 2 july 2016. pavol frešo stepped down leadership of party. new vice-chairmans elected. leader expected elected later in 2016.
