king charles of castile , aragon (1500–1558), elected holy roman emperor charles v in 1519, head of aragonese state. succeeded throne upon king ferdinand of aragon s death in 1516, , knew none of languages of spain @ first. eighteen-year-old charles visited aragon may 1518–january 1520 formally crowned king , negotiate aragonese cortes on tax rights. poorer country, charles demanded less aragon castile, , taxes not major factor in revolt of germanies (unlike revolt of comuneros of castile). charles issued edicts allowing germanies arm against barbary pirates, decision later haunt him.

diego hurtado de mendoza, (1468–1536), second son of cardinal mendoza , mencia de lemos born , raised in castle of manzanares el real. mendoza veteran of reconquista , italian wars; distinguished himself in taking of melito, , appointed count of mélito reward in 1506.


in 1520, appointed viceroy of valencia, , went city of valencia rule. castilian, proved controversial choice, , provoked residents of valencia siding nobles in refusing seat representatives elected people. palace attacked, barely held after 2 hours of assault. mendoza , other nobles realized city lost, , retreated countryside. raised army, defeated army of germanies @ battle of gandia on july 23, 1521. however, rebellion defeated other royalist-sympathetic generals, , returned city of valencia in november 1521. acted moderation toward defeated, not seeking cause revolt. arrival of germaine of foix in 1523, however, punishment against agermanats intensified until pardon in december 1524.
