on 9 november 1915, while en route salonica marseilles, torpedoed , sunk approximately 60 miles (50 nmi; 100 km) south-southwest of cape matapan, greece german u-boat u-35, killing 1 person. date, californian s wreck remains undiscovered. californian went down less 200 miles (170 nmi; 320 km) location hmhs britannic, titanic s sister ship, sunk mine on year later.
