early years

hammond born in 1883 @ crown point, new york. came family manufactured iron generations @ crown point. grandfather brig. gen. john hammond, served in union army during civil war , later became u.s. congressman new york. when hammond family s iron works began suffer result of competition lake superior iron ore, family moved chicago.

prior world war i, hammond member of illinois national guard. when united states entered world war in spring of 1917, hammond first lieutenant of field artillery in national guard. served 2 years in u.s. army during , after war. after several months serving on mexican border, hammond deployed france part of 42nd infantry division, famed rainbow division. promoted captain major , achieved rank of lieutenant colonel. placed in command of first battalion of 149th field artillery regiment , participated in final rush of american forces in meuse-argonne offensive. hammond left command while serving in germany in january 1919 , returned civilian life in chicago in march 1919. in interview chicago daily tribune, hammond said germans feared americans, because fighting time. noted, can assured there no gentlemanly agreement 149th. fought. tells whole story.


at end of world war i, hammond returned illinois national guard. promoted rank of colonel in 1921 , brigadier general in 1931. in 1932, recognized brigadier general in u.s. army reserves.

beginning in 1923 , continuing until @ least 1933, hammond member of university of michigan board in control of athletics. hammond served president of illinois manufacturers association first several months of 1933. resigned position in july 1933 serve in franklin roosevelt administration executive director of emergency re-employment campaign of national recovery administration ( nra ). hammond resigned nra position in november 1933. before resignation, reported hammond disagreed administration s policy of giving powers nra boards weaken industry s self government. on day hammond s resignation announced, fellow chicago industrialist j.l. kraft of kraft cheese corp. stated nra run hairbrained professors, of them communistic tendencies not operate peanut stand. while denying difference of opinion nra, hammond later stated found economic principles of new deal incompatible own, commenting nra means nuts run america.

death

hammond died @ home on chicago s lake shore drive (no. 1448) in june 1950 @ age 66. underwent surgery in february 1950 , traveled california following operation. returned chicago when condition failed improve. survived wife, former barbara whiting, , 2 sons, stevens hill hammond , thomas lyman hammond. funeral held @ st. chrysostom s episcopal church in chicago.
