railway network of sierra leone
his chief work abroad , main work of later years construction of railways in west africa, in acted consulting engineer crown agents colonies. after preliminary surveys, begun in 1893, sierra leone government railway constructed line of 2 ft. 6 in. gauge. track freetown, sierra leone, songo started in march 1896 , opened in 1899. line gradually extended until, in august 1905, shortly before shelford s death, had reached baiima, 220 miles freetown. in gold coast colony line of 3 ft. 6 in. gauge sekondi tarkwa begun in 1898 , completed in may 1901. october 1903 line had been extended far kumasi, 168 miles sekondi. in colony of lagos line lagos ibadan (123 miles) completed in march 1901. short railway, 6 miles in length, sierra leone heights above freetown, opened in 1904, , road-bridges built connect island of lagos mainland.
shelford s services recognised honour of c.m.g. in 1901 , k.c.m.g. in 1904. had been elected member of institution of civil engineers on 10 april 1866, , 1887 1897 , 1901 till death member of council. in 1888 vice-president of mechanical science section of british association. fellow of royal geographical , other societies, , served on engineering standards committee representative of crown agents colonies.
after retirement practice shelford resided @ 49 argyll road, kensington, died on 3 october 1905. buried in brompton cemetery.
