dam square, known dam main town square , considered center of city. on west edge of square royal palace. rectangular in shape, , stretches 200 meters west east , 100 meters north south. links streets damrak , rokin, run along original course of amstel river centraal station muntplein (mint square) , munttoren (mint tower). dam marks endpoint of other well-traveled streets nieuwendijk, kalverstraat , damstraat. short distance beyond northeast corner lies main red-light district: de wallen.


the national monument, white stone pillar designed j.j.p. oud , erected in 1956 memorialize victims of world war ii, dominates opposite side of square. overlooking plaza nh grand hotel krasnapolsky , upscale department store de bijenkorf. these various attractions have turned dam tourist zone.
