academics

at unicamp, academic studies divided 4 main areas: exact sciences (which includes formal , physical sciences), human sciences (roughly equivalent social science, including arts), biological sciences (roughly equivalent life sciences) , technologies (including engineering , technical studies). division reflects on how university structured how campuses designed.

undergraduate programs

unicamp offers 70 different degree-granting undergraduate programs, covering different areas of science. completing undergraduate program grants either bachelor s degree or licentiate degree, although programs offer both degrees. in line brazilian educational system, no graduate education required practice profession, including law , medicine, undergraduate programs vary in length provide necessary training. programs @ unicamp last total of 4 years, engineering programs typically lasting 5 years , medicine lasting 6 years.

specialization programs either offered unicamp s extension school, extecamp, or directly schools , institutes. in past 25 years, on 100,000 students have been reached , in 2014, unicamp joined coursera , 8 online courses being offered, 2 of them between popular coursera courses in brazil. outreach actions take variety of forms, including events, publications, technological, educational, cultural , social products , services. department cultural development hosts several events, open surrounding community. events held @ casa lago cultural space , @ cultural center social inclusion , integration.

every year, unicamp hosts open doors event (unicamp de portas abertas, upa), in main campus visited on 50 thousand high school students across country. event provides presentations , discussions on role of university in society, career presentations , tours, students visiting several areas of university , gaining better understanding of different areas of study.

faculty

unicamp employs close 1,800 professors, @ least doctoral degree. faculty career structured in 3 major tiers:

doctor professor (professor doutor, equivalent assistant professor): candidates must have doctoral or equivalent degree
associate professor (professor associado): candidates must have livre docente title, similar german habilitation
tenured professor (professor titular) – ms-6 (top rank, ms-6 professors allowed hold positions such dean of faculty/school or rector of university)

hiring done through civil service examination, including written test, teaching examination, academic history analysis , other additional criteria. same process required professors changing tiers: associate professor pursuing tenure position must go through same examination process compete other external candidates position. 2 initial tiers include sub levels, , professors promoted between them merit. monthly starting salary full-time assistant professorship around r$ 10 thousand, , tenured position around r$15 thousand. uniquely among public universities in brazil, unicamp has career focused on full-time research. there approximately 100 full-time researchers @ university.

library system

the university s library system (sistema de bibliotecas da unicamp; sbu) comprises large central library named in honor of césar lattes, , 27 other satellite libraries, located in individual institutions, housing on 1 million volumes, in addition hundreds of thousands of ebooks , academic journals. system officially created in 1983, aggregating several independent libraries operated across university. large central library inaugurated 6 years later, in 1989.

the library system automated , collections may accessed , searched on internet. digital library section supports database more 25,000 dissertations presented in university, access largest electronic libraries of academic journals in world. includes several historical libraries , media archives focused on specific authors , topics, such edgard leuenroth archive , collections honoring césar lattes, sérgio buarque de holanda, monteiro lobato , others.
