synopsis
prologue

cupid addresses assorted shepherds , shepherdesses, accusing them of infidelity, , invites them enjoy true pastoral pleasures. short scena preceded french overture.


act 1

the couple resting on couch, , venus, accompanied obbligato recorder, toying adonis s sexual anticipation. before gives in, hunting music heard, , encourages him leave , join chase. huntsmen intrude , sing of enormous boar causing severe problems; goaded, adonis leaves.


act 2

cupid studying art of love, learning mother how strike love human hearts. in turn teaches lesson group of little cupids. cupid advises mother way make adonis love more use him ill. call graces, givers of beauty , charm, give honor goddess of love.


act 3

venus , cupid shown struck grief. adonis brought in, dying wound given him boar. duets venus, , dies in arms. lament begins funeral march, , refrain taken pastoral characters (in reality, venus courtiers). opera ends g minor chorus mourn thy servant , strong example of elegiac counterpoint.
