History Iowa Highway 150
the current iowa 150 began on centennial bridge in davenport
from cedar rapids, route continued south , east overlapping us 30 , iowa 38 tipton. entirely replaced iowa 74, stretched tipton davenport. through davenport, highway entered northwest along aptly named northwest boulevard. further town, intersected kimberly road , transitioned onto harrison street. in downtown, highway overlapped us 61 , us 67 along 4th street, briefly along gaines street, , along 2nd street. iowa 150 followed us 67 onto centennial bridge ended @ state line on mississippi river. on illinois side of bridge, us 150 began @ state line.
during 1950s, today s highway system beginning take shape, iowa 150 rerouted couple times in cedar rapids. first adjustment happened in 1954, when us 30 taken off of mount vernon road , put onto new road on south side of town. iowa 150 moved west through downtown , across cedar river. turned south onto 6th street sw, on us 30 , us 218 joined @ 18th avenue sw. 3 routes turned east onto new road, us 218 turned south @ bowling street sw. within 5 years, iowa 150 moved northeast side of cedar rapids , marion. instead of continuing south coe college, turned east @ collins road , connected us 151 , iowa 64 near eastern city limits. followed 2 routes downtown marion, turned south onto road headed southeast towards mount vernon. east of mount vernon, followed us 30 iowa 38 , continued towards davenport. within few years, iowa 150 rerouted onto newly extended iowa 13, extended south us 30 near bertram. @ longest extent, route 180.52 miles (290.52 km) long.
that changed on january 1, 1969, when iowa state highway commission reorganized primary highway system. commission reassigned sections of highway new numbers , removed duplicate numbers unnecessary. in iowa 150 s case, route truncated @ us 151 in cedar rapids. duplications along us 151, iowa 13, us 30, , iowa 38 removed , remaining segment tipton davenport renumbered iowa 130. route s new length 97.96 miles (157.65 km).
the southern end of iowa 150 changed again in 1984. after i-380, constructed parallel iowa 150 between cedar rapids , center point, opened traffic, iowa 150 s routing south of iowa 101 redundant new interstate. result, iowa 150 rerouted on iowa 101 south vinton. vacated section of iowa 150 renumbered iowa 920 old iowa 101 s north end center point , iowa 921 center point cedar rapids.
in 1980s, iowa 150 near oelwein rerouted onto new section of highway along former right-of-way of liquidated rock island railroad. proposed four-lane highway, pressure oelwein residents caused iowa transportation commission approve three-lane highway instead. new section of highway open 1986. old section of iowa 150 remained on primary highway system unsigned iowa 916 until july 1, 2003.
construction underway realign curves 4.5 miles north of independence. project has been under discussion since release of road safety audit in december 2009.
flooding in 2008
on june 11, 2008, 2 miles (3.2 km) of iowa 150 north of vinton closed few months after flood waters cedar river destroyed roadway. north of intersection county road e16 (cr e16), 400-foot-long (120 m) section of roadbed washed away. end of month, 1 lane bridge on cedar river had reopened local traffic , farmers. reopening bridge saved drivers having use 22-mile-long (35 km) detour. august, iowa 150 reopened traffic vinton cr e16. washed-out section of highway rebuilt, repaved, , reopened on september 10, 3 months after closed.
