house fire , arrest

on evening of may 7, 1963, turnbow , wife taking daughter choir practice @ around 7:00 pm. returned home around 9:30 pm, when wife noticed problem ventilation systems in home. then, around 3:00 on morning of 8th, turnbow awakened wife dee shouted him house on fire. turnbow grabbed rifle, went outside , began shooting @ white people outside home. house had been sent ablaze members of ku klux klan.


as investigation unfolded, several witnesses , african americans, told investigators no white man threw fire bombs [turnbow s] living quarters [turnbow] instigated , had... other negroes throw fire bombs home , did shooting own living quarters. after investigation concluded, concluded turnbow either had set house on fire or had been involved house being set on fire. arrested holmes county sheriff andrew p. smith , charged arson. spent 2 days in jail before being released on bond.


marriages , children

turnbow married twice , had 6 children, sons jewross , hartman, , daughters mae alice, mae bell, mary , christine.


death

turnbow died on august 15, 1988 @ methodist hospital of middle mississippi in lexington @ age of 83. funeral held on august 24 @ rock of ages church of god in christ in tchula. elder fred wade officiated interment in pinkston cemetery north of lexington.
