james born in lincoln, illinois in 1882, , started working career after high school graduation @ turn of century. after few years became assistant superintendent of construction @ st. louis–san francisco railway on line between st. louis , memphis. here received first practical experience in accounting , operating of departments.
in 1909 james appointed @ interstate commerce commission @ staff of examiners of railroad accounts. in next 2 decades served several large organizations, such southern pacific railroad, merchant shipbuilding corporation, merritt-chapman & scott, cramp-morris industrials, inc., later part of baldwin locomotive works, , westinghouse electric corporation.

in 1931 james became associate @ counsellor, stevenson, jordan & harrison, inc., 1945 associate counsellor. specialist in cost accounting , factory management.
beside consulting work james had been visiting lecturer @ columbia university , other new york universities , @ pennsylvania state college. delegate asme eighth international management congress @ stockholm.
james had been longstanding member of national association of accountants, present @ annual conventions, active on chapter meetings, , contributor n.a.c.a. bulletin. served president of new york chapter of national association of accountants in 1945-46, in 1948 james had joined american society of mechanical engineers (asme). in 1948-49 served national president of society advancement of management (sam) successor of william l. mcgrath, , succeeded dillard e. bird.
