on 27 june 1950, 2 days after north korean invasion of south korea, mansfield steamed sasebo, japan, south korea provide gunfire support , escort services. 3 months later, flagship desdiv 91, led division inchon channel, openly inviting shore batteries unmask themselves. after shore opened upon her, mansfield smothered them 5‑inch bombardment; suffered no damage or casualties in action.
two weeks after inchon, mansfield, while searching downed air force b‑26, struck mine severed bow below main deck , injured 27 crewmembers. receiving stub bow @ subic bay, steamed naval shipyard, bremerton, washington repairs; rejoining u.n. fleet off south korea late in 1951 gunfire support, escort, , shore bombardment duty.
after korea, mansfield alternated between duty in westpac , training west coast reservists. overhauled in fall of 1955 @ naval shipyard, long beach, california, returned there in 1960 fram. mark ii overhaul , conversion replaced 3 inch 50 cal. battery mark 25 , mark 32 antisubmarine torpedo batteries, , configured aft superstructure dash. october 1960 october 1961, new destroyer conducted training exercises 1st fleet off west coast. following 3 years, home ported @ yokosuka, provided escort service 7th fleet s fast carrier attack force.
