for first 3 seasons, petticoat junction centered on homespun humor , village s backward mindset. beginning in season four, however, show gradually took on different feel. stories began focus more on bradley sisters, on romance of steve , betty jo, became key characters. show became more of domestic comedy. musical numbers , singing became prominent. songs featured bradley sisters singing trio, billie jo solo, steve solo, or steve , betty jo duet. sometimes, many 2 or 3 songs in each episode.


the additions of mike minor steve elliott , meredith macrae third billie jo influenced change, both accomplished singers. characters of billie jo , bobbie jo changed. billie jo went being boy-crazy dumb blonde strong, independent young lady. bobbie jo went being book-smart (nicknamed walking encyclopedia ) more of bubble-head used comic relief.


kate bradley s appearance changed. in first 2 seasons, kate s wardrobe , hair style depicted dowdy country farm woman. beginning third year (in color), clothing , coiffure more flattering , appealing, , wore high heels.
