an elaborate performance of ancient court music (with accompanying dance) known jongmyo jeryeak (hangul: 종묘제례악; hanja: 宗廟祭禮樂) performed there each year jongmyo jerye ritual. musicians, dancers, , scholars perform confucian rituals, such jongmyo daeje (royal shrine ritual) in courtyard 5 times year. [1]. today rituals have been reconstructed , revived. jongmyo daeje has been designated important intangible cultural property no. 56 , performed every year on first sunday in may. [2]. jongmyo jerye-ak, traditional court music of joseon, performed royal court orchestra , has been designated important intangible cultural property of south korea no. 1.[3]. court music has origins in chinese court music brought korea during goryeo period (918-1392). [4]. king sejong composed new music ritual based largely on hyangak (with dangak) in 1447 , 1462. [5].
