the abbey church built towards end of 1200s, 1 of oslo s earliest buildings constructed of brick came duke hakon s brickworks on banks of alna river.
after protestant reformation in 1536 church converted hospital.
in 1567, during swedish attack, first church destroyed. on ruins of abbey, building divided several floors , served thereafter hospital building church on first floor. house known stone building added later. regarded today oldest hospital building. during 1700s there several buildings, including dollhuset psychiatric patients.

in 1734, new church built on foundations of nave. after last fire on 13 january 1794 church rebuilt in louis xvi style 2 years later, again in brick. old medieval choir demolished , replaced tower stands there today. newly built church opened on 11 may 1796. in 1800s church rebuilt several times. in period 1934-1939, renovated architect william k. essendrop, reestablishing earlier appearance. flat murtaket replaced arched vault, , new sacristy built. church reopened on christmas eve 1939, in presence of king haakon vii.
