as two-year-old premonition did not run until autumn. won 2 races, including gainsborough stakes on 1 mile @ hurst park racecourse.

1953: three-year-old season

in 1953, premonition aimed derby. began winning blue riband trial stakes @ epsom downs racecourse. in trial stakes @ sandown park racecourse started @ odds of 30/100 surprisingly beaten bandoola, in run race. @ york racecourse, premonition established himself leading contender derby impressive win in great northern stakes.

in derby @ epsom, premonition started 5/1 joint-favourite pinza in field of twenty-seven runners. never in contention @ stage , finished unplaced behind pinza , queen s colt aureole. @ end of june, premonition sent contest irish derby @ curragh. won head irish-trained favourite chamier, ridden bill rickaby, in rough finish. following consultation chamier s trainer vincent o brien, rickaby lodged objection winner on grounds of boring in closing stages. stewards sustained objection , disqualified premonition. boyd-rochfort felt had been unfairly treated , did not run horse in irish classic twelve years. purchased newsreel film of race , had shown week @ cinemas in newmarket.

premonition prepared st leger. in august won voltigeur stakes @ york empire honey, had finished ahead of him in derby. in st leger @ doncaster in september, premonition started @ odds of 10/1, aureole, trained boyd-rochfort being made favourite @ 6/4, , french-trained northern light, winner of grand prix de paris being fancied. both queen , sir winston churchill in attendance on fine autumn day attracted crowd of 250,000 yorkshire course. ridden eph smith, premonition stayed on in straight take lead , won going away 3 lengths northern light, aureole in third.

1954: four-year-old season

in 1954, premonition prepared major staying races. assist preparation, wyatt purchased supposedly ordinary french horse named osborne act training partner , pacemaker. season began won yorkshire cup in impressive style 3 lengths eastern emperor, childe harolde , osborne. premonition , osborne ran next in winston churchill stakes @ hurst park. before race, boyd-rochfort told osborne s rider, inexperienced jockey named royce burrows, set pace premonition, 1/8 favourite, , second if can . osborne led premonition straight, became apparent travelling more better fancied stable companion. in closing stages, burrows made little attempt ride finish, allowing hard-ridden premonition win head. racecourse stewards held enquiry , referred matter jockey club, fined boyd-rochfort £100 ambiguous instructions burrows. boyd-rochfort responded saying punishment seemed question honesty , felt retiring sport.

premonition never recovered best form, finishing unplaced in both ascot gold cup , king george vi , queen elizabeth stakes. osborne, however, went on win goodwood stakes in july under top weight of 133 pounds , doncaster cup in september.
