in 1980, first children in need telethon broadcast. series of short segments linking evening s programming instead of usual continuity. devoted raising money exclusively destined charities working children in united kingdom. new format, presented terry wogan, sue lawley , esther rantzen, saw dramatic increase in public donations: £1 million raised year. format developed throughout 1980s point telethon segments grew longer , regular programming diminished, being dropped altogether 1984 in favour of single continuous programme. format has grown in scope incorporate further events broadcast on radio , online. regular presenter, wogan has become firmly associated annual event, continuing front until 2014 stepping down due ill health.


in 1988, bbc children in need became registered charity (number 802052) in england , wales, followed registration in scotland (sc039557) in 2008.
