one of california’s oldest wine regions, livermore valley american viticultural area (ava) played pivotal role in shaping california’s wine industry. in 1840s, california pioneers looking outstanding vineyard sites began planting grapes in region. robert livermore planted first commercial vines in 1840s. after california joined union 31st state in 1850, pioneer winemakers c. h. wente, first-generation immigrant germany, (founder of wente vineyards), james concannon, first generation irishman, (founder of concannon vineyard), , charles wetmore, portland maine born american , pioneer of california, (founder of cresta blanca winery) recognized area’s winegrowing potential , bought land, planted grapes , founded wineries in 1880s. charles wetmore went france in 1878 when appointed delegate california viticultural association paris exposition. charles able in 1882 obtain semillon, sauvignon blanc, , muscat de bordelais cuttings 1 of prestigious vineyards in france, chateau yquem. these superior clones helped revitalize california wine industry. in 1889 charles won grand prize first pressing (1884) in 1889 paris exposition. charles shared these cuttings other growers including c. h. wente used chateau yquem grape cuttings produce chateau wente wine.
