1960s: foundation
the maternity of campinas, school of medical sciences located
in 1960s government of state of são paulo planned open new research center in interior of state promote development , industrialization in region, , commissioned zeferino vaz, founder of university of são paulo s school of medicine in ribeirão preto, organize it. in parallel, medical school being planned in campinas, demand local population dated 1940s. school of medicine of campinas created law in 1959, actual implementation never took place.
the new university created law on december 28, 1962, effective functioning begun in 1966. before that, school of medicine functioned. in april 1963 first vestibular, general admissions exam, happened, 1,592 candidates competing 50 spots in medicine program. first lecture in newly created university of campinas took place on may 20 of same year. 1965, organizing commission new university started looking location new campus.
a large area comprising 110 hectares (270 acres) donated almeida prado family, located in valley in district of barão geraldo in city of campinas, near intersections of multiple highways. until then, barão geraldo small village surrounded farmland, in particular sugar cane plantations. new development brought dramatic change district, resulting in entire new neighborhoods being zoned, planned , built, same almeida prado family.

work on new campus begun on october 5, 1966, , first building completed institute of biology, followed administrative buildings. in same year, zeferino vaz nominated rector. in parallel new campus, new units opened in other cities, absorbing local schools. dental school of piracicaba absorbed in 1967, , in 1969 engineering school of limeira.
1970–1990: growth , crisis
over following 2 decades, new university expanded rapidly. campus grew 19 institutes , schools, , after zeferino vaz died in 1981 named after him. campus construction completed, school of medical sciences (formerly school of medicine of campinas) moved new campus, , teaching hospital, hospital de clínicas, became largest public hospital in region.
expansion on campus continued rapidly, new buildings, institutes , expansions being added every year. late 1970s, university faced crisis. during fast expansion, relied on draft bylaws, borrowed university of são paulo, , lacked formal internal regulations aging zeferino vaz, while no longer rector, acting moderating force between parties conflicting interests, in particular leftist academic community , state s government, appointed conservative military regime ruling country.
after zeferino s death in 1981, conflict took place between university s general coordinator, appointed , backed government, , directive council, composed of directors of different institutes. rector introduced new rules reducing power of general coordinator. retaliation, state s government removed 6 members of directive council, replacing them people state s education council, loyal governor, paulo maluf.

tensions between academic community , government-appointed counselors increased, future minister of education, paulo renato costa souza, president of faculty association, classifying episode white intervention . following dismissal of several institute heads , members of administration, administrative workers went on strike, support of students , faculty. activities in university frozen strike, governor declared formal intervention in university in october 1981.
despite police-backed intervention, university continued on strike. appointed institute heads failed break stalemate between internal , external forces, , 1982, discussions begun on new list of candidates rectorship. eventually, josé aristodemo pinotti, former dean of school of medical sciences considered moderate, selected academic community , accepted governor. in following week, on april 19, 1982, intervention lifted, , academic activities resumed normally.
after crisis, unicamp saw period of renewal , restructuring. in 1983 bylaws rewritten, ensuring autonomy of academic community, , new management structure campus implemented. in 1986 newly created university council replaces previous directive council supreme body of university. last years of 1980s saw reformulation of admissions exam, expansion of laboratories , completion of first units of student housing.
1990 onwards

with new administrative structure capable of supporting continuous growth , autonomy secured, unicamp went through period of consolidation in 1990s. there increase in night programs, created provide alternative low-income students had work during day, , increase utilization of classrooms , existing infrastructure, reaching 1 third of total available places.
the period saw expansion of technology industry in region, centered around unicamp, motorola, ibm, solectron, lucent technologies , many others set research labs , production centers in region driven large number of highly qualified students graduating every year, culminating in opening of institute of computing in 1996.
in 2000s unicamp consolidated 1 of leading research , education centers in latin america brought new challenges: other public universities in brazil, high payroll costs (over 90% of total budget) constrain investment , expansion. further aggravated economic depression brazil facing since 2014, largest in country s history.
