the battle of salta, 1813


after defeat, tristán signed 40-day truce , returned peru. defeat of royalists @ salta gave insurgents domination on northern part of old viceroyalty , led revolts against spanish in charcas, potosí , later cochabamba, alto perú (now bolivia). @ expiration of truce, general belgrano followed tristán alto perú, entering territory of charcas on may 7, 1813. however, belgrano defeated @ vilcapugio on november 1, , again @ ayohuma on november 14.


the december 1824 defeat of viceroy josé de la serna in battle of ayacucho ended spanish power in peru. tristán senior spanish military officer in colony, , such assumed office of provisional viceroy, solely purpose of transferring power nationalists.


after this, chose stay in peru, , active in peruvian politics. exercised functions of prefect , commander in arequipa. peruvian minister of war , marine. participated in creation of peruvian-bolivian confederation , served foreign minister. october 12, 1838 february 23, 1839 president of state of south peru within confederation. died in lima in 1860.


he described niece, flora tristan, in travel book pérégrinations d une paria (peregrinations of pariah, 1838). flora tristan feminist , socialist writer, and, incidentally, maternal grandmother of french painter paul gauguin.
